Kreisel DXD-1202 Subwoofer

Ken Kreisel has been around many years making loudspeakers and subwoofers for theaters. The list of professional installations that use his equipment is extensive and includes notable venues like Skywalker Sound, Sony Pictures and Warner Brothers.

I recently had the opportunity to work on a home cinema that used a pair of his latest DXD-1202 subwoofers along with a set of Quattro KK-Q125LC speakers for left, center and right front channels. This theater is 3200 ft3 in volume and has proper acoustics in it for a home theater.

The sound quality provided by the Kreisel subwoofers and speakers after a professional audio calibration was excellent. This is remarkable considering that the main speakers are not very large and the subwoofers only use 12″ drivers. Digging into the details of the products provides a little insight into how this is possible.

Each DXD-1202 uses dual opposing proprietary 12 inch long through drivers. The surface area the two 12″ drivers equals an 18″ driver. Using opposing drivers reduces cabinet vibration. Dual monoblock amplifiers running out of phase for each speaker reduces the demand on the power supply enabling 750 watts RMS power and up to 2200 watts peak power output. A DXD-1202 weighs in at 80 lbs and is relatively compact in size for such a high output product (HxWxD) 23.7″ x 15.35″ x 19.37”. These retail for $3000 each. Key features are as follows:

  • “BACK-SIDEFIRE™” design optimized for very tight time domain pressure coupling with your studio or room
  • Unique Modular Scalable Building Block Design, upgradeable to the DUO and QUATTRO
  • Dual 12″ Long-Throw KEN KREISEL PROFESSIONAL SOUND™ HIGH VELOCITY DEEP BASS PUSH-PULL-PULSAR™ Drivers

Kreisel Quattro KK-Q125LC

The Kreisel Quattro KK-Q125LC delivered excellent sound. The quality of the drivers used along with good efficiency enabled this product to shine in the application. The use of four tweeters increased the power handling and efficiency while not resorting to a horn or compression tweeter which can reduce the precision of high frequency sound reproduction considerably. I was able to cross these over to the subwoofer at 80Hz with no difficulty. The crossover in each is designed differently for the application by changing the radiation pattern of the tweeters to reduce the sound going to the side walls. The speakers are also available in angled versions to aid with reducing side wall reflections. A Q125 is (HxWxD) 16 9/16″ x 6 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ in size, 4 ohm impedance and 90dB SPL at 1 meter @ 2.83 volts. These retail for $1200 each. Key features include:

  • Four 1″ dome tweeters in an array
  • Two 5.25″ woofers with fiber-Pulp cone and cast aluminum chassis
  • Enclosure is made from high quality MDF
  • High gloss finish is of excellent quality
  • Can be mounted on the matching stands or as an on-wall solution
  • Stands are available as accessories
